Reflecting on J.G. Ballard science-fiction short-story The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista, Emotional Ruins asks how smart-materials (such as the plastex material in Ballard story) can become emotionally haunted artefacts.
“Echoing every shift of mood” of its inhabitants.
Using touch, as an emotional conductor, and thermochromics materials as a revealing, prophetic medium, allowing to read one’s ethereal self.
Collecting fragments of stones and cement in London, the project aims to create a parallel between the reality of analogue materials and the science fiction prospect of an emotionally and technologically intelligent material.
Evoking the ruins of emotional pasts trapped within materials, archaeological digs and findings of abandoned psychotropic houses of Stellavista.
