Biography

ARTIST & RESEARCH DESIGNER

Laurene Pilastre is a researcher, visual artist and a movement practitioner currently based in Paris, she completed her Master in Information Experience Design at the Royal College of Art in 2021 in London, UK. Laurene’s artistic practice exposes the relationships between the human and the non-human. Focusing on the significance of the animus or governing intention of matter her visual and installation based work involves objects in evolution, in-between states, constantly transforming, splintering, creasing, contracting and expanding in reciprocal engagements, intermingling with bodies and stories. The materiality she explores questions commonly analogue and industrial-used materials such as metal, expanded foam, textile and resin.
Her work foregrounds the experience of matter as an actant, having its own agency, thus the materials she works with shape her, her gestures and practice and in a mutual movement, she contributes to form matter, aiming to establish a material collaboration.
Her research around matter and the spatiality of the body draws from intellectual and philosophical ways of thinking, engaging with the pivotal question of how can we unsee? Her approach to this question contribute to transcend fixed prejudices about what is and exists in a rigid reality and consider the way people, movements, objects and all things are in relation to one another.Working across a variety of medium and media - spanning from audio-visual installation, sculpture, moving image, workshops and performance - Laurene develops an array of creative research strategies that allows her to explore how we communicate, transmit and receive information.Laurene also holds a MA in Information Experience Design from the Royal College of Art and a BA (hons) in Product Design from the Central Saint Martins in London, UK.

CV

Laurene Pilastre is a researcher, visual artist and a movement practitioner currently based in Paris. She completed a Master in Information Experience Design at the Royal College of Art in 2021 in London, UK.
Her work explores embodied ways to reconnect with the Earth's
rhythm, wisdom and transformations though movement practices, workshops,
multimedia installations and performances. Her practice is rooted in the urgency
and necessity of making visible what is invisible, researching human perceptual
realities in relation to more-than-humans entities and offering spaces for alternatives to grow in which the body is considered as a
sensing territory continually vibrating, pulsing and mingling with its environment. She studied Product Design at Central Saint Martins in London in 2017, where she developed a materiality focusing on the significance of the animus or governing intention of matter.
She explored commonly analogue and industrial-used materials such as metal, expanded foam, wood and textile.

Before starting her studies at the Royal College of Art she worked as a set designer assistant for theatres and museums exhibitions which deeply influenced her practice and drove her to consider the way people, movements, objects and stories relate to each other and come together to create meaningful phenomena.

Laurene’s work foregrounds the experience of matter as an actant, having its own agency, thus the materials she works with shape her, her gestures and practice and in a mutual movement, she contributes to form matter, aiming to establish a material collaboration.

Her research around matter and the spatiality of the body draws from intellectual and philosophical ways of thinking, engaging with the pivotal question of how can we unsee?
Her approach to this question contribute to transcend fixed prejudices about what is and exists in a rigid reality and consider the way bodies, elements, objects and all things engage with one another.Working across a variety of medium and media - spanning from audio-visual installation, sculpture, moving image, workshops and performance - Laurene develops an array of creative research strategies that allows her to explore how we communicate, transmit and receive information.
Laurene also holds a MA in Information Experience Design from the Royal College of Art and a BA (hons) in Product Design from the Central Saint Martins in London, UK and a 230-Hour Daoist Flow and Yoga teacher training certificate from Triyoga London.

SECOND SOUFFLE

2022Audiovisual installation

Duration : 08.41 minutes

Second Souffle (2022) is an audiovisual
installation composed by Anibal Vidal, performed
and written by Lucie Cure and directed by
Laurene Pilastre. It explores the body as a
territory of expressions and emotions froma collective and individual perspective, as it
transitions through different stages in life.

Second Souffle (2022) is imagined as a multimedia installation, a sensory experience. The
film is to be projected on a series of veils to create an atmospheric experience. Relatingto breath and wind the light veils undulate in the air, giving life to the projection. The film
becomes a spatialized piece through the overlaying of veils. Going in-between the veils,
the visitor is invited to explore the installation through a multiplicity of perspective. The
physiology of their body, their hearing and sight are mobilized.

Musically, Second Souffle (2022) is divided in 2 sections and one coda. In the first section, the electronics gradually incorporate notes and descend in register to the
very low bottom notes of a piano, creating a constant cluster of notes which assimilates air or blowing wind. In the second section, this air effect now is done with
voice sounds, repeating the same process of the first section, but this time voices accumulate on top of each other until they create a white noise effect by the end of the
section. The coda is left for solo voice as a journey from creating air effects and transforming that materiality into organic sound as the human voice.

The visual part of the piece draws on elemental images, the momentum, the feeling and the unveiling aspect of the poem. The human figure is suggested, never
explicit; it is implied by the ripples of a moving envelope, suggesting a human form in its absence, through waves of movements. Playing on the articulation of the
opposing concepts of visible/invisible, absence/presence, light/dark, the penumbra is used as a photographic developer, showing the imperceptible vibration and
resonance of the sound piece.

Arms Floting Up

2021
Moving Image
Duration : 10.03 minutes

Arms floating up (2021) is a moving image piece exploring the space of air around one’s body and the physiological bound one can form with the empty space that surrounds and exists within them.
In the documented performance a textile prop is extending the performer body and materializing the animacy of Air. In a sensual symbiosis state textile prop and performer are reciprocally animated one another, relating a story of breath and air as active matters that hold primal life energy.

Arms floating Up (2021) was exhibited as a spatial installation in the group show Beyond The Frame at The Horse Hospital, London, 2021.

BREATHING ENTANGLEMENT, OUR RELIANCE ON AIR

2021Performance
Fabric sculpture - silk
Duration : 39.44 minutes

What kind of relation can we weave between human bodies and the space of Air?

Through this performance and performative prop the breath is experienced as what enables us to be animate. Approaching the body as a more-than-human site of ecological exchange in which the prop allows the boundaries of the body to spill out all the while containing and holding the space of air.

“With every breath we take, we expose our lungs to the outside world, regardless of all the barriers we have erected between the environment and ourselves” - Luce Irigaray, The Forgetting of Air, 1999

“We cannot escape this air. It is the air that comes into our body through our lungs” - Nerea Calvillo, Particular sensibilities, e-flux Architecture

Performer Buket Yenidogan

Breathing Entanglement, our Reliance on Air (2021) is part of an experimental research project, a triptych presenting three different scales of experiments to reinforce our bodily bound with air, the space we inhabit. Enquiring about the relation between bodies and the space of Air, the invisible spiritual matter that holds primal life energy and acts as a continuum between the Earth and our bodies ecologies the project investigates ways of creating new embodied experiences in which the body is a sensing territory continually vibrating, pulsing and mingling with Air.

COLLECTION OF GUIDED POEMS AND RECIPES FOR EMBODIED WAYS OF SENSING THE AIR

2021
Book
198 pages
Width 119 X Height 200 mm

What kind of relation can we weave between human bodies and the space of Air?

This collection of Guided Poems relate to gestures and movements as a way to connect with the air within and outside oneself. Rooting the project’s political aspect within the reader’s intimate sphere.

Through this collection I developed twenty-nine ‘guided poems’ one could use to deepen and explore their relation with air. A manual, gathering recipes to encourage gesture, to explore sensually and physically the power and necessity of air within our lives.

Developed in collaboration with designer Juliette Coquet, the graphic identity of the collection enacts a movement and aims to prompt a bodily experience that comes out of the page. The collection visuals and use of emptiness are inspired by traditional Chinese paintings, considering voids and blank space as dynamic and active elements, the core of the composition.

THE SPACE OF AIR

2021
Moving Image
Duration : 09 minutes 42 seconds
Two channels installation

What kind of relation can we weave between human bodies and the space of Air?

Moving in the affective troposphere for embodied ways of sensing the air, this moving image piece acts as an affective and meteorologic presence to enter a different temporality and space-time, bringing spectators into new experiential and spatial possibilities.

“The troposphere, the messy space where we breathe and live along with other beings” - Nerea Calvillo, Particular sensibilities, e-flux Architecture

Performer Carol Blakemore
Thank you to Mariam Bergloff, Vrinda Jelinek and Louis
Grateful acknowledgement to the London Wildlife Trust and the Walthamstow Wetlands
